there has been complete silence from the nra. this is the first time we've heard from them since friday. the statement from the nra reads in part, i'll quote you this part first, out of respect for the families and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting. the nra is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to help make sure this never happens again. well, the statement went on to say that the nra will hold a quote unquote, major news conference on friday of this week. meantime, several national retailers are already making changes in light of what happened on friday. dick's sporting goods has removed all guns from its store in danbury, connecticut. all guns. that is its closest outlet to newtown, where we are tonight. they also stopped selling modern sporting rifles at all stores nationwide. on walmart's website, you will find plenty of guns but not the type of bushmaster rifle that adam lanza used. the chain has taken down that web page. at

lawmakers from both sides of the party, even staunch members, staunchly backed by the nra are united in their grief and say they want change to happen, but will it? >> erin, sometimes it takes tragedy to make us confront reality. you are starting to see politicians on both sides of the aisle say maybe now is not the time to rely on ideology or partisan politics put to start taking a long look at the laws that exist around guns. not infringing on the second amendment, but taking a look at what reasonable restrictions can be put in place. in the last 24 hours, two leading southern democratic leaders, joel manchin and mark warner, said this event has changed them and they're open to new solutions. let's take a look at what m manchin told christine amanpour. >> who would think that children in america or anyone would be slaughtered? it changed me. i don't know of anyone who goes hunting with an assault rifle. i don't know people who need 10, 20, 30-round clips. >> i believe every american has a second amendment right and the ability to hunt is part of our culture. i had an nra rating of

is this just playing up to the nra or a plausible solution? >> it's certain ly not a plausible solution, but the problem is, there are no plausible solutions. there's a guy, a criminalnologist who wrote a great piece about this. the thing with mass shootings, these guys are well prepared. and so, the idea from the right that you're dpoipg going to arm politician official, have them at every school is false and the idea on the left that you're going to eliminate guns, that's also false. you have to look at the gun violence problem more broadly rather than fighting the last war. >> but there is a disconnect in this conversation. the quote from frank lutz. here's what he had to say about the nra's propos. >> the public wants guns out of the schools, not in and they're not asking for a security official or someone else. i don't think the nra is listening. i don't think they understand. most americans would protect the second amendment rights and yet agree with the idea that not every human being should own a gun. >> so, first to you, where is that
